GENERALLY considered to be the world's first abstract ballet, Georges Balanchine's triptych was allegedly inspired by a visit to the legendary jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels. While the truth might be more complex than this - I gather that the establishment was already employing the balletic image in its display before Balanchine arrived and not vice versa, as is usually claimed - the result of this aesthetic marriage was inspired.
