Kronos, at 40, has changed the game for string quartets

The Kronos Quartet, celebrating its 40th anniversary this season, has commissioned about 800 new works -- unheard of among its musical peers. And the group's innovations in use of live electronics, sound design and theatrical lighting are notable, too, since the group conceives of a concert as an experience that tells a story, employing all the technological smarts of the age.
