Slightly more than 31 million people in the United States watched the Michael Jackson memorial on television Tuesday. Nielsen Media Research says that's a smaller audience than watched Princess Diana's 1997 funeral (33.2 million) and President Barack Obama's inauguration (38 million). Millions more watched video streams of the Jackson program on their computers. The memorial was carried live on 18 networks, including all the big broadcasters and cable news stations.
