Steve Albini, one of the most important figures in the history of American underground rock, has died. Pitchfork reports that Albini passed away from a heart attack yesterday. Albini led the bands Big Black, Rapeman, and Shellac, the latter of whom will release To All Trains, their first album in many years, next week. Albini also engineered tons of great, influential albums from bands like Nirvana, Pixies, and PJ Harvey, and he operated the Chicago studio Electrical Audio. Albini was 61.
