As an appendix to his “Lowside of the Road,” author Barney Hoskyns offers his take on the 50 most significant songs of Tom Waits' illustrious career. Every fan could (and should) find something to quibble about – “Tom Traubert's Blues” the best thing Waits has ever done? Methinks not! –but for the most part, Hoskyns makes it plain that he's spent a long time listening to and considering Waits, and ultimately, his list is a thoughtful one.
