Wayne Shorter Quartet delivers a transcendent jazz fest set

It is tempting to simply wave a white flag of surrender in the face of trying to describe a performance as transcendent as that given by the Wayne Shorter quartet on Sunday night at the Detroit International Jazz Festival. Seriously. Music at any high level is ineffable, but the moment you try and put into words the majestic sweep, authoritative depth and devious mystery of this band's collective expression, you can only fail.
