Bebop master Brown taught young bassist a lesson about paying it forward
No figure played a larger role in John Clayton's career than Ray Brown, the seminal bebop bassist who worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson and countless others before settling into studio work in Los Angeles. Clayton met Brown at age 16, enrolling in an extension course the master was teaching at UCLA.
