Here is a man whom Barack Obama called upon from the campaign trail and who frequents the exclusive Vanity Fair Oscar parties, but still can slip hard material into a song and make it as recognizable to middle-aged dads in middle America as it is to residents of the housing projects in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, where he grew up.
