Leap of faith that paid off in America

Taking a British musical to Broadway is always a bit like taking coals to Newcastle, since musicals were actually born and virtually patented there. Yet last year an English musical, set among a coal-mining community in Easington, near Newcastle, went to Broadway and has received 15 nominations for the Tony Awards, New York's most prestigious theatre accolades, which are being presented next Sunday. That's an all-time record, equalled only by those received by The Producers .
