Patti Smith, loosely knit

I have never met Patti Smith, the poet, musician and artist often called 'the high priestess of punk." But once, years ago, when she was living here and raising her children in self-imposed exile in St. Clair Shores, I stood behind her in a grocery store line and watched as she fished dollar bills from the pockets of her jeans.
