Review: German soprano Nadja Michael gives a staggering performance as Salome at S.F. Opera

The production takes place within a box-like minimalist set, emphasizing the inner workings of life and the mind (thank you, Dr. Freud). Sung by bass-baritone Greer Grimsley, John the Baptist '” or 'Jokanaan,' in the opera '” emerges from his prison singing about abominations and incest and becoming the fixation of the teenage temptress played by Michael, who craves his ivory skin, his matted hair, his scarlet lips.
