Thursday's celebration of conductor Michael Tilson Thomas's 70th birthday was a musical six-gun salute with superstars, surprises. and a million big blue balloons. At one point, the San Francisco Symphony's gala-like concert tribute at Davies Symphony Hall set six grand pianos on stage, occupied by a flock of superstar virtuosi. At another point, rockers Elvis Costello, Boz Scaggs and Phil Lesh showed up to play the Beatles' 'Birthday.'
