Gangsta rap, the most controversial musical genre of the last 20 years, is also one of the most theatrical. For all of the rappers' claims of cold-blooded rawness, they rarely took themselves seriously, writing cartoonishly vulgar (and stupidly misogynistic) rhymes and surrounding them with highly dramatized skits and sound effects.
