What is improv?

Improvisational comedy uses spontaneous acting techniques, often guided by audience suggestions. The concept originated in the 1940s in the acting games of drama teacher and author Viola Spolin and was immortalized by pioneering Chicago troupes the Compass Players and later Second City, which began in 1959.
