In the four-seasons scheme to which the Dance is meant to conform, Casanova's Chinese Restaurant falls smack bang in the middle of summer. Fittingly then, for a novel set almost entirely in London, it's rather a louring, overcast affair: the radiant comedy of Lady Molly's has given way to discord and death, albeit still only at the peripheries of Nick's world.
